Pour se rendre au Brantley Lake (24/02) on doit passer de 1 322m (Alamogordo) par Cloudcroft (2 642m): on passe donc du désert (25Celsius) à des autos bondées de neige (0Celsius) avant de redescendre vers Brantley Lake (26Celsius). Par contre ce matin, c,est un ciel sans nuage. Le lendemain une super visite de Carlsbad Cavern National Park: 3 heures à marcher sous la terre à 250 mètres de profondeur. Les ascenseurs sont en réparation mais qu’importe, une superbe visite. L’éclairage tamisé est excellent pour les effets mais pourri pour prendre des photos par des amateurs…comme nous. Heureux d’avoir vu Kartchner Caverns avant celle de Carlsbad puisque cette dernière est grandiose en hauteur et longueur. Remarque: Au Brantley Lake, même si on ne les voit pas, les coyotes se ‘’parlent’’ tous les soirs à la brunante.

To get to Brantley Lake (24/02), we must pass from Alamogordo (1 322 meters) through Cloudcroft (2 642meters): which means going from a desert climate (25Celsius) to seeing cars full of snow (0Celsius) before going back down to Brantley Lake (26 Celsius). Luckily there’s not a cloud in the sky. The next day it’s Carlsbad Cavern National Park: 3 hour walk at 250 meters underground. There are elevators but they’re out of commission. Nonetheless a great visit. The low lighting is perfect for sightseeing but terrible for picture taking by amateurs…like us. Glad that we saw Kartchner Caverns before Carlsbad since these are longer and bigger. By the way, at Brantley Lake every evening at sunset, even if we don’t see them, we can hear the coyotes talk to each other.

En roulant vers le Oliver Lee State Park près d”Alamogordo on doit s’arrêter à un ‘’US Border Patrol Checkpoint’’, endroit sur les routes qui vérifient pour l’immigration illégal. Le douanier nous demande ‘’American?’’ mais en lui disant non ‘’Canadian’’ il ne porte plus attention et nous dit de procéder sans aucune vérification. On comprend pourquoi puisque de l’autre côté du vr les douaniers procèdent à passer les menottes à un matamore (Martine a eu le temps de prendre une photo)! Donc on procède vers le Oliver Lee State Park, situé à dos de la Lincoln National Forest. Excellent endroit. Mais attention, puisque la région est sujette aux tempêtes de sable…ce que nous avons vécu. Irréel de voir un ciel bleu et un nuage brun de plusieurs centaines de pied se diriger directement sur nous. Malgré la porte et les fenêtres fermées, je n’ai jamais vu autant de sable dans le vr. Le lendemain, c’est la visite du White Sands National Monument. Endroit remarquable; des kilomètres de sable (gypse) blanc à perte de vue et la possibilité de glisser sur les dunes. Ça me rappelait une photo d’il y a plusieurs décennies de la famille Roy (en visite chez Lola & Bob Powell) qui avait visité cet endroit. Je révais d’y aller. Le lendemain, on pensait aller faire du ski à Riudoso, mais c’est à 140km et on attend un réparateur pour le jeep (une pierre a fait une ‘’étoile’’ dans le pare-brise). Alors visite du Space Hall of Fame Museum et visionnement de 2 films Imax à Alamogordo. Visite qui vaut la peine si on demeure quelques jours dans la région. Pour la ville elle-même, disons que la récession y est toujours présente. Demain, en route pour le Carlsbad Cavern National Park.

On our way to Oliver Lee State Park near Alamogordo  we have to stop at a ‘’US Border Patrol Checkpoint’’, road check for illegal immigrants. An agent asks us ‘’American’’? I say ‘’No. Canadian’’. He doesn’t really look at us and tells us to proceed. We quickly understand, as patrolmen  next to the rv are putting handcuffs on a big muchacho (see Martine’s pics)! Drove on to the State Park which was excellent. There, we saw for the first time a blue sky being overtaken by a great big brown cloud : a sandstorm. Even if all windows and door closed, we’ve never seen so much dust in the rv. Next day it was off to White Sands National Monument which can easily be confused for snow…well kinda. I can remember decades ago seeing a picture of the Roy family (who were visiting Lola & Bob Powell) at this very same park and telling myself that I would love to see it. Next day we were suppose to go skiing in Ruidoso but it meant a 140km drive (one way) and we were waiting for a person to come and repair the Jeep windshield (hit by a rock). So instead we visited the Space Hall of Fame Museum and saw 2 Imax films, which is worth a visit if you plan on staying a couple of days. As for the town, I think they are still in a recession. Tomorrow were off to Carlsbad Cavern National Park.

Après plus d’un mois en Arizona, en route pour les parcs nationaux du Nouveau-Mexique. Mais afin de couper le trajet, arrêt pour le City of Rocks State Park et possiblement une incursion au Gila Cliff Dwellings, ancien village indien (plus de 500 ans) incrustré dans le roc d’une montagne. Mais pusiqu’il s’agit d’un trajet de plus de 200km aller-retour dans de petites routes, on décide de rester au campground et de faire des randonnées. On aura sûrement l’occasion de visiter ce genre d’habitation au cours d’un autre voyage. L’autoroute 10 (route de Californie à la Floride) au Nouveau-Mexique est parsemée de déchets, ce que nous n’avons pas remarqué en Arizona. Manque de volonté/conscience ou de fonds pour garder les routes propres? Enfin.

After nearly a month in Arizona, it’s on to the National Parks of New Mexico. But in order to breakdown the travelling time, a 2 day stop at City of Rocks State Park and a visit to the Gila Cliff Dwellings (500 year old indian village cut in the rock of a cliff). Because it’s a 200+ km drive , we decided to stay at the park and do some trails. We will in the future have the opportunity to visit these type of villages. By the way, in New Mexico US10 (main highway from California to Florida) is littered with trash, something we did not notice in Arizona. Lack of motivation/awareness or funds to keep the roads clean? 

L’arrivée au site de camping n’a pas été comme prévu. Malgré des sites bien aménagés, ils n’ont pas cru bon de niveler les terrains avant de mettre le bitûme. Donc le vr est en position de ‘wheely’ pour les 2 prochains jours (voir photo). La visite de la grotte a été super mais interdiction de caméras cell etc. La raison est justifiée: avec les caméras, les selfies etc, cela ralenti la visite de 1 heure ½ considérablement. J’ai quand même pris la peine de mettre sur le site quelques photos prises sur le web. Le lendemain (18), visite de Tombstone, ville historique sutrtout à cause de la bataille à l’OK Corral entre Wyatt Earp/ses frères et les Clanton/McLaury (pour plus d’info cliquer sur ce lien wikipedia). Pour moi, c’est de voir et vivre cette ville qui a représenté beaucoup dans ma jeunesse lorsque je jouais au cowboy en prenant mon faux fusil comme celui de..et oui..Wyatt Earp. Pour Martine c’est…c’est…bien elle est bien contente pour moi! C’est nos dernières journées en Arizona. Maintenant nous allons à la découverte du Nouveau-Mexique.

The arrival at the campground was not as expected. Though the sites are well maintained, they didn’t think of leveling them before putting in the pavement. So the rv looks like it’s doing a wheely (see photo). The cavern visit was great but it is forbidden to bring cameras, cell phones etc. The reason is very good: with picture taking and selfies it would slow down the 1½ hour tour too much. I’ve put on the site pics that I took from the web to give you an idea of the magnificient cave. The next day (18^th), visit of Tombstone, historical site of the famous “gunfight at the Ok Corral between the Earps and the McLaury/Clanton’s (for more info, click on this wikipedia link). For me, this is a great moment, seeing the town which represented so much in my younger years, playing a cowboy with my gun, a replica of the one used by Wyatt Earp. For Martine this was…eh..eh..well she was happy for me! These are our last days in Arizona. It’s on to New Mexico.

Un autre super parc d’état! Une situation idéale pour quelques visites intéressantes: Sabino Canyon et Mont-Lemmon/Skyline Scenic Byway. Au Sabino Canyon, on peut prendre un tram qui nous emmène à plus de 4 km de la base. De là, on peut facilement descendre à la marche (ou demeurer sur le tram pour le retour) jusqu’à la base en passant par 9 ponts dont l’eau (qui provient des neiges du Mt-Lemmon) traverse sous et parfois par-dessus la chaussée. Le lendemain on prend le Skyline Scenic Byway afin de nous rendre au Mont-Lemmon pour faire du ski: à la base du byway, nous sommes approx à 3 200 pieds (975 mètres) et le mercure frôle les 22 degrés à 9:00am (on prévoit 31 en pm). Lorsqu’on arrive à la base du centre de ski à 8 200 pieds (2 500 mètres) il fait 12 degrés! Mais horreur! Même si j’ai lu sur le web que le site est ouvert à l’année, je n’ai pas remarqué que le ski est fermé les mardi-mercredi! Pas grave, les points de vue pendant ce trajet de 60 km en valait la peine.

Another great state park. It’s an ideal location for 2 sightseeing tours: Sabino Canyon and Mount-Lemmon/Skyline Scenic Byway. At the Sabino Canyon, there is a tram that transports you about 3 miles (4km) from the base. From there you can walk down (or stay on the tram for the return trip) passing 9 bridges where water (coming from Mount Lemmon ‘s snowpack) passes under and sometimes over the road. The next day it’s up the Skyline Scenic Byway and on to the Mount-Lemmon ski valley; at the base of the byway, we are approximately at an altiude of 3 200 feet (975m) and the temperature is 22 Celsius (72F) at 9:00am (expecting 90F in the afternoon). When we arrive at the ski valley at 8 200 feet (2 500m), it’s 53F! But oh no! Even if on the website it says that they are open year round, I did not notice that skiing is closed on Tuesday’s-Wednesday’s! No matter, the 60 km trip (37miles) was worth it.

Au Tucson Koa, nous avons réservé un site “Deluxe patio and grass (gazon)”… où les gens emmènent leurs chiens faire leur besoin sur notre gazon! Vraiment pas notre genre de campground avec des voisins à 6 pieds et même moi (avec mes oreilles) capables d’entendre leurs flatulences! On en a profité pour sortir chaque jour et soir. Premier soir souper au resto Acacia: pétoncles pour Martine et carré d’agneau pour moi. Très bon mais pas exceptionnel. Le lendemain, visite du Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum à ne pas manquer lors d’une visite à Tucson. Presque tout se passe à l’extérieur. On y voit la faune (de très près) et la flore de la région. Petit tour (bucket list exige!) du Saguaro National Park. Ces cactus étant présents partout dans la région, nous n’avons fait que le Visitor Center et une randonnée sur une route de terre. Pas d’arrêt au Old Tucson Studios, ville western reconstituée: à 19.95$ par personne…non merci. On s’arrêtera dans les prochains jours à une vrai ville du far-west, Tombstone. Pour la St-Valentin, souper au Signature Grill au Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa à flanc de montagne (425$ US la nuit). Excellent resto et une vue époustouflante sur la vallée de Tucson.  En passant, cette ville a très peu d’autoroutes, mais plusieurs grandes artères avec de nombreux feux de circulation, donc les trajets sont longs. Si on y revient, on sera plus stratégique dans nos choix de camping. Pour les visites à l’ouest de la ville, nous allons privilégier le Gilbert Ray Campground.

We reserved a “Deluxe with patio and grass” where people bring their dogs to do their business on our grass! Really not our kind of campground with neighbors within smelling distance of their natural gasses! We opted to go out every day and night. First night we went to Acacia: Martine had the scallops and I the rack of lamb. Good meal but not exceptional. The 14^th was a full day. We started by visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a site not to be missed. Most of the exhibits are outside: it’s a living museum displaying the wildlife and vegetation of the area. Next was a short visit to the Saguaro National Park. Since these cacti are present all over the area, we only stopped at the visitor center and made the dirt road loop. At 19.95$ per person, no stops at the Old Tucson Studios (old western town). In the next few days we will be visiting a real historic western town, Tombstone. For St-Valentine, dinner at the Signature Grill at the Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa (425$ US per night). Great restaurant and a great view of the Tucson valley. By the way, there are not a lot of highways in Tucson but mostly multi-lane boulevards with a lot of road lights. So trips are long. When we do come back we will be more strategic in our choice of campgrounds. For the visits on the west side of the city, we’d camp at the Gilbert Ray campground.

McDowell Mountain est un autre camping régional qui rivalise facilement avec les campings de l’état: grands sites bien aménagés, installations très propres et des bénévoles super accueillants. Mais ce que nous avons le plus apprécié c’est la ville avoisinante (Fountain Hills) et son merveilleux parc avec sa fontaine d’une hauteur de plus de 300 pieds (90 mètres). Le lendemain (le 12), ce fut une découverte: le Picacho Peak State Park. Décidément un endroit exceptionnel entre Phoenix et Tucson avec des randonnées à flanc de montagne. On y reviendra sûrement un jour.

McDowell Mountain is another regional park that is as good the state parks: well maintained sites, clean facilities and friendly volunteers. But what we appreciated most was the nearby town of Fountain Hills with its wonderful park offering a superb 300 foot high fountain. The next day (the 12^th), we were amazed by Picacho State Park. An exceptional place between Phoenix and Tucson with trails up the mountain peaks. We will definitely return here one day.

Nous devions prendre notre avion le 10 au matin et atterrir à Phoenix à 13:00. Mais en arrivant è l’aéroport à 5:15am, l’agente Westjet me dit que notre départ est le 11!! Après longue discussion je lui montre un courriel reçu fin novembre qui indique le départ le 10.. Elle lit ce courriel et plus bas…effectivementl, il y a changement pour le 11…oups..Pas grave on nous met sur un vol Mtl-Tor-Calgary-Phoenix avec arrivée à 19:30..en classe affaires. Pas pire pour mon erreur!  Nous avions laissé le vr chez un concessionnaire afin d’effectuer changement d’huile et petite réparation.Trop tard pour récupérer le VR alors Best Western. Le lendemain matin on récupère le vr mais voilà il y a eu un petit accrochage et une des portes est un peu crapoutie. On peut soit attendre 5-10 jours pour le remplacement ou bien elle crédite une bonne partie des services encourus. Pas le temps d’attendre à Phoenix donc crédit et on reprend la route. Je dois avouer que ces gens (Arizona RV Supercenter) sont très honnêtes car il aurait été facile de ne pas dire mot puisque ce n’était pas très apparent. Merci Anna Marie!

We were taking the plane the 10^th in the mnorning and land in Phoenix at 13:00. But when we arrived at the airpor at 5:15 am, the Westjet agent told us that our flight was on the 11^th…After a long discussion, I show her the last email I received from them late November that states our departure on the 10^th. She then asked me to show her that email and lower in the email it is clear that the new departure is on the 11^th…oups. No worry, she puts us on a flight plan Mtl-Tor-Calgary-Phoenix arriving at 19:30..in business class. Not a bad mistake on my part! We had left the rv at an rv maintenance retailer for an oil change and a small repair. Too late to get the RV so a night at the Best Western. Next morning we get the rv only to find out there’s been a little mishap and one of the storage doors is cringed. Either we wait 5-10 days for the replacement or they will credit a good portion of the work already done. No time to waste we take the credit and we go our way. I must admit that these folks (Arizona RV Supercenter) are very honest; it would have been very easy not to say a word since the damage is not very apparent. Thank you Anna Marie!
