Déc 2015-Avr 2016: Sud USA

Myakka River State Park est à environ 25km de la plage numéro 1 au USA, Siesta Key Beach. Elle a été votée numéro 1 probablement  à cause de son sable blanc fariné et sa largeur de près de 500 mètres (1500 pieds). Mais qui dit numéro 1 dit... OCCUPÉ. Déjà à 9:30am il y traffic pour se rendre via..le seul pont qui se rend à la plage..stationnement plein, monde mur à mur..pas toujours des gens brillants. Suggestion: Allez de bonne heure (9:00) et sacrez votre camp avant 14:00! Pour le camping, excellentes installations mais... loin de tout.

Myakka River State Park is approx 25km (15miles) from the USA's number 1 beach, Siesta Key Beach. It was voted number probably because of it's white powdery sand and the width of it, more than 1 500 feet. But when you are number one..you are BUSY! Already at 9:30 am traffic is at a stand still to cross the only bridge to the beach..busy parking, wall to wall people and some of them not very intelligent. Suggestion: get there for 9:00am and get the hell out by 2:00pm at the latest! As for the campground, great facilities but a bit out of the way with nos services close by.

C'est notre deuxième visite à ce parc et ce ne sera pas le dernier. Malgré qu'il est un peu loin des services (shopping, épiceries etc) les facilités sont en plein ce que nous aimons: sites privés (2 services seulement cependant), entouré de plans d'eau pour se promener en kayak, possibilté de pêcher et une longue plage de sable blanc pas très occupée. Aussi à 6-7 km, un excellent resto de fruits de mer /poissons toujours très achalandé,le Island Grill. L'an prochain on veut y passer au moins 10 jours!

This is our second visit to this campground and it won't be the last! Even if stores and groceries are a bit far, the facilities are exactly what we are looking for: big sites (water-electric only), encercled by waterways for kayaking and fishing, and a long white sand beach with very few people. Also a great restaurant which dishes out great fish/seafood, the Island Grill. Next year we'll be here for at least 10 days!

HOME SWEET HOME!

Une halte d’un soir dans ce beau camping, qui est maintenant un de nos préférés. Des installations superbes au beau milieu d’une forêt de cyprès et jonchant la rivière Suwannee. Qui est Stephen Foster? C’est lui qui a composé la chanson thème de la Floride..entre autre. Le parc est également le site d’une grande réunion annuelle de chansons folkloriques américaines. On y retrouve  plusieurs bâtiments à visiter dont un village où artisans vendent leurs oeuvres: entre autre peintures, poteries, mouches de pêches. De plus  il y a un musée dédié aux oeuvres de Stephen Foster: ‘Oh Susannah’ ça vous dit quelque chose?

A one night stopover in this beautiful park which is now one of our favorites. Superb installations in the middle of cypress forest and near the Suwanee river. Who was Stephen Foster? The commposer of many songs and the author of the official song of Florida. The park is also the site of a big annual american folk song festival. There are a few buildings that you can visit such as artisans that make potery, paintings and even artificial flies for fishing. Also there is a museum dedicated to the songwriter and his legacy: do you remember 'Oh Susannah'?

  Un autre à retenir…mais pour la fin mars et avril (eau et temps encore frais au début mars). Beau camping avec beaucoup d’arbres et plusieurs services, à moins de 1 km d’une magnifique plage de farine blanche. Belle température qu’une seule journée sur 3 mais quand même très plaisant; et tel que mentionné, on y reviendra sûrement. Seul hic est le traffic puisque la route de la côte est très achalandée avec beaucoup d’hôtels, restos et pour Martine..des outlets (shopping)…Oh yes baby!!!

Another keeper…but more so end of March and April (water and temperature still cool in early March). Beautiful campground with lots of trees, services and most of all less than a mile from a magnificent white sand beach. Though the weather was not very good (1 day of sunshine) we will certainly be back next year. However there is a lot of traffic on the coastal highway with lots of hotels, restaurants and for Martine…shopping outlets. Oh Yes Baby!!!

Les 4 prochains jours sont consacrés à la région de New Orleans. À 15-20 minutes du centre-ville, un havre de paix extraordinaire, le Bayou Segnette State Park. On se croirait au milieu de la campagne. À New Orleans, on débute avec le quartier français et Bourbon Street. Il faut absolument voir ce quartier durant un samedi soir: une beuverie à ciel ouvert ! Bourbon Street sent mauvais, et est peuplé de personnages drôles, amusants ou tout simplement tristes à voir!  Une expérience humaine hors du commun.  Malheureusement il ne reste que très peu de bars pour écouter du Jazz ou du Blues mais nous en avons trouvé quelques –uns. A voir également: Jackson Square, un des nombreux cimetières, le Garden District, sans compter la visite à une plantation. Pour nous ce fut Laura’s Plantation. Peu de building mais un tour guidé très intéressant et en français! Vraiment, New Orleans est à vivre au moins une fois dans sa vie. C’est ici que René nous a quitté après une belle semaine en sa campagnie. À la prochaine mon René!

The next 4 days were spent in New Orleans and the region. A great campground only 15-20 minutes from downtown is the Bayou Segnette State Park.A peaceful haven. Evidently we started with Bourbon Street and the French quarter. You must visit on a Saturday night: an all night street party. Bourbon Street smells, is rowdy and full of funny and not so funny characters. Unfortunately there are not that many Blues/Jazz clubs left in the area though we did find a few that were great. Also not to be missed: Jackson Square, a visit to one of the cemeteries, Garden District and if time permits, a plantation. We went to Laura’s plantation which had only a few buildings but the tour was very interesting…and en français! This is where René headed back home after spending a great week with us. See you soon René!

Ici on parle français…mais avec de l’anglais! Le camping est situé le long de 4 grands étangs on l’on pratique la pêche. J’ai des lignes mais..pas de coffre à pêche…il est à Montréal!! Installations neuves, un bon endroit pour camper si on visite la région. Le 12 au matin, c’est le Champagne’s Swamp Tour, avec M. Champagne lui-même puisque nous sommes 7 francos: nous 3 et 4 français de France.Donc le tour se fait en Cajun…au début difficile à comprendre mais à la longue…on ne comprends pas plus. Mais super matinée à se promener dans les bayous! Une belle experience pour les yeux.

Here we speak French…mixed with English! The campground is set amongst 4 ponds where fishing is encouraged. I have fishing lines..but left the fishing box in Montreal! The installations are new, so it’s an excellent place top stay when visiting the area. The next morning, we’re off to Champagne’s Swamp tour with Mr. Champagne himself since we are 7 francophones: the 3 of us plus 4 frenchmen from France. So the tour is in Cajun French..at the start it’s difficult to understand but after awhile…we still don’t understand most of it!! But a great morning touring the bayous of Louisiana!

Quelle ville intéressante! San Antonio a plusieurs attraits dont le River Walk, soit une rivière au milieu de la ville jonchée de restos et magasins, Toute l’allée est illuminée de toutes les couleurs, ce qui la rend très festive et attrayante.  Pas d’autos, que des gens qui déambulent le long des berges. Visite de “The Alamo”, lieu d’une  bataille historique  où entre autres, Davy Crockett a péri. De plus, René (frère de Martine) vient faire un bout de voyage avec nous, soit de San Antonio à New Orleans! Le camping Koa fut une déception à part être à proximité: il est mal organisé et les sites sont extrêmement collés les uns aux autres. Mais quand même la proximité aux attraits de la ville justifie le tout.

What a great city. San Antonio has a lot to offer tourists. First, there’s River Walk, boutiques and restaurants all along both sides of the San Antonio river. Also the “Alamo” site of the famous battle where Davy Crockett was killed.  Also, René (Martine’s brother) is joining us from here to New Orleans. As for the Koa campground, the sites are too close and they are not well organized. But it’s easy travelling  to all the sites of the city.

 La météo nous a rejoint et pour la première fois depuis nombre de semaines, on annonce nuages et pluie. Qu’importe, avant de se rendre à San Antonio Texas ou René (frère de Martine) vient nous rejoindre, visite du canyon et de ses pictographes créés il y a plus de 3 500 ans. Belle randonnée et guide très intéressant. Les installations sont super et ça vaut la peine de s’y arrêter pour 1 ou 2 soirs tout au plus. Ne pas oublier de faire des provisions, puisqu’à Comstock un seul magasin qui vend un peu de tout…et est aussi un garage de réparation!

Well, for the first time in weeks, the forecast is for clouds and a bit of rain. So before moving to San Antonio where René (Martine’s brother) will join us, we spent a few days at this state park and did the guided tour of the canyon which has 3 500 year old pictographs. Good trail and guide. The campground installations are excellent and worth a stop if you want to visit the canyon. But bring provisions since the only store in Comstock (nearest town) also does car repairs!

On a pris la décision de rester au Maverick Ranch RV Park à Lajitas au lieu de camper à l’intérieur du parc national. Bonne décision…en général. Seul inconvénient c’est que leur système de réservation ne vaut pas le c…l Donc on a du changer 3 fois de sites en 4 jours. Qu’importe, les installations sont très bonnes et la piscine (moyenne de 30C chaque jour) est apprécié après les visites dans les parcs. Le Big Bend National Park est immense et il y a vraiment 3 régions à visiter à de bonnes distances: 1. Le Rio Grande Village.: deux campings dont celui sans service qui est très bien. À faire absolument: se rendre au Hot Spring (source chaude naturelle) au bord du Rio Grande Une source à 105F et pouvoir sauter dans les eaux froides du Rio Grande à 2 pas. 2. Chisos Basin: Montagnes au plein milieu du parc. Un camping sans service super mais..il faut 24 pieds et moins pour s’y rendre. 3. Santa Helena Canyon. Wow! Beau camping sans service mais surtout le canyon avec la randonnée au milieu d’une faille étroite. Ensuite c’est Le Big Bend Ranch State Park. Une balade en auto plus qu’agréable le long du Rio Grande et une randonnée au Hoodoos Trail. Super. Ah oui. Question de s’amuser, on a regardé le débat républicain dans la salle commune. À part nous, un seul américain, qui nous dit après plusieurs commentaires de Donald Trump: ‘’Vous étrangers, devez rire de nous avec toutes ces conneries à la télé?’’! Pas un mot… on est dans l’état du far west et du gun!

We decided to stay at the Maverick Ranch RV Park instead of camping in the national park. Good decision…in general. Only inconvenience is their reservation system: we had to change sites 3 times in 4 days. No matter, the installations are very good and the pool is a great treat after a day in the parks (average temperature is 30C). Big Bend National Park is huge and can be divided in 3 regions. 1. Rio Grande Village: nothing spectacular but absolutely on the list is a visit to the Hot Spring. Situated on the bank of the river it has a constant temperature of 105F! 2. Chisos Basin: The mountains in the middle of the park with a great campghround…but your rig must be less than 24 feet. 3. Santa Helena Canyon: Wow! Imagine a narrow canyon and a trail that follows the river within. Last but not least is a drive through the Big Bend Ranch State Park and doing the Hoodos Trail. Worth the trip when in Lajitas. On the Thursday night, we decided to watch the republican debate in the common room. Only one other person there, who after 15 minutes in the debate, turns to us and says: ‘’You foreigners must think we’re a bunch of fools!’’ Not a word on our part..this is the state of the far west..and guns!! 

Texas! Tab..de  Câl..Roche d’un camion dans le pare-brise du VR. De plus, malgré que Roam Mobility me dit que j’ai de la réception de cell…nada! Ost.. de Ch…Oui Martine j’arrête les bénédictions. Dans le fond pas bien grave et ‘’it is what it is’’. Cet endroit permet de couper le trajet et aussi aller à l’observatoire McDonald qui offre un Star Party: observation du ciel par l’entremise d’une multitude de téléscopes. Super. Nous avions jamais vu autant d’étoiles…sauf lors d’une réunion de famille au Lac Faillon en 2000. Le lendemain (27/02) visite de Fort Davis National Monument, fort établi vers 1850 comme poste de ravitaillement sur la route entre El Paso et San Antonio et pour protéger les passants contre les possibles attaques des Apaches (peu d’attaques surtout du vol de bétails). De plus ce fort a abrité les ‘’Buffalo Soldiers’’ (soldats noirs) nommés ainsi par les Apaches en signe de respect.

Texas! I’ll stay away from the words I said but a rock hit and made a beautiful star in the Rv’s windshield…And to top it off, I don’t have cell reception even though Roam Mobility told me I would. Well ‘’it is what it is’’. Close to the State Park is the McDonald Observatory. Went to the Star Party, which gives you the opportunity to view the skies through a multitude of telescopes. Super. Never saw so many stars… except at the family reunion at Lac Faillon in 2000. The next day we visited Fort Davis National Monument, built around 1850 as a supply post between El Paso and San Antonio. It also served as a deterrent against Apache raids, which did not happen very often. The fort was also the home to the Buffalo Soldiers (african americans). The name was given by the Apaches as a sign of respect.

Pour se rendre au Brantley Lake (24/02) on doit passer de 1 322m (Alamogordo) par Cloudcroft (2 642m): on passe donc du désert (25Celsius) à des autos bondées de neige (0Celsius) avant de redescendre vers Brantley Lake (26Celsius). Par contre ce matin, c,est un ciel sans nuage. Le lendemain une super visite de Carlsbad Cavern National Park: 3 heures à marcher sous la terre à 250 mètres de profondeur. Les ascenseurs sont en réparation mais qu’importe, une superbe visite. L’éclairage tamisé est excellent pour les effets mais pourri pour prendre des photos par des amateurs…comme nous. Heureux d’avoir vu Kartchner Caverns avant celle de Carlsbad puisque cette dernière est grandiose en hauteur et longueur. Remarque: Au Brantley Lake, même si on ne les voit pas, les coyotes se ‘’parlent’’ tous les soirs à la brunante.

To get to Brantley Lake (24/02), we must pass from Alamogordo (1 322 meters) through Cloudcroft (2 642meters): which means going from a desert climate (25Celsius) to seeing cars full of snow (0Celsius) before going back down to Brantley Lake (26 Celsius). Luckily there’s not a cloud in the sky. The next day it’s Carlsbad Cavern National Park: 3 hour walk at 250 meters underground. There are elevators but they’re out of commission. Nonetheless a great visit. The low lighting is perfect for sightseeing but terrible for picture taking by amateurs…like us. Glad that we saw Kartchner Caverns before Carlsbad since these are longer and bigger. By the way, at Brantley Lake every evening at sunset, even if we don’t see them, we can hear the coyotes talk to each other.

En roulant vers le Oliver Lee State Park près d”Alamogordo on doit s’arrêter à un ‘’US Border Patrol Checkpoint’’, endroit sur les routes qui vérifient pour l’immigration illégal. Le douanier nous demande ‘’American?’’ mais en lui disant non ‘’Canadian’’ il ne porte plus attention et nous dit de procéder sans aucune vérification. On comprend pourquoi puisque de l’autre côté du vr les douaniers procèdent à passer les menottes à un matamore (Martine a eu le temps de prendre une photo)! Donc on procède vers le Oliver Lee State Park, situé à dos de la Lincoln National Forest. Excellent endroit. Mais attention, puisque la région est sujette aux tempêtes de sable…ce que nous avons vécu. Irréel de voir un ciel bleu et un nuage brun de plusieurs centaines de pied se diriger directement sur nous. Malgré la porte et les fenêtres fermées, je n’ai jamais vu autant de sable dans le vr. Le lendemain, c’est la visite du White Sands National Monument. Endroit remarquable; des kilomètres de sable (gypse) blanc à perte de vue et la possibilité de glisser sur les dunes. Ça me rappelait une photo d’il y a plusieurs décennies de la famille Roy (en visite chez Lola & Bob Powell) qui avait visité cet endroit. Je révais d’y aller. Le lendemain, on pensait aller faire du ski à Riudoso, mais c’est à 140km et on attend un réparateur pour le jeep (une pierre a fait une ‘’étoile’’ dans le pare-brise). Alors visite du Space Hall of Fame Museum et visionnement de 2 films Imax à Alamogordo. Visite qui vaut la peine si on demeure quelques jours dans la région. Pour la ville elle-même, disons que la récession y est toujours présente. Demain, en route pour le Carlsbad Cavern National Park.

On our way to Oliver Lee State Park near Alamogordo  we have to stop at a ‘’US Border Patrol Checkpoint’’, road check for illegal immigrants. An agent asks us ‘’American’’? I say ‘’No. Canadian’’. He doesn’t really look at us and tells us to proceed. We quickly understand, as patrolmen  next to the rv are putting handcuffs on a big muchacho (see Martine’s pics)! Drove on to the State Park which was excellent. There, we saw for the first time a blue sky being overtaken by a great big brown cloud : a sandstorm. Even if all windows and door closed, we’ve never seen so much dust in the rv. Next day it was off to White Sands National Monument which can easily be confused for snow…well kinda. I can remember decades ago seeing a picture of the Roy family (who were visiting Lola & Bob Powell) at this very same park and telling myself that I would love to see it. Next day we were suppose to go skiing in Ruidoso but it meant a 140km drive (one way) and we were waiting for a person to come and repair the Jeep windshield (hit by a rock). So instead we visited the Space Hall of Fame Museum and saw 2 Imax films, which is worth a visit if you plan on staying a couple of days. As for the town, I think they are still in a recession. Tomorrow were off to Carlsbad Cavern National Park.

Après plus d’un mois en Arizona, en route pour les parcs nationaux du Nouveau-Mexique. Mais afin de couper le trajet, arrêt pour le City of Rocks State Park et possiblement une incursion au Gila Cliff Dwellings, ancien village indien (plus de 500 ans) incrustré dans le roc d’une montagne. Mais pusiqu’il s’agit d’un trajet de plus de 200km aller-retour dans de petites routes, on décide de rester au campground et de faire des randonnées. On aura sûrement l’occasion de visiter ce genre d’habitation au cours d’un autre voyage. L’autoroute 10 (route de Californie à la Floride) au Nouveau-Mexique est parsemée de déchets, ce que nous n’avons pas remarqué en Arizona. Manque de volonté/conscience ou de fonds pour garder les routes propres? Enfin.

After nearly a month in Arizona, it’s on to the National Parks of New Mexico. But in order to breakdown the travelling time, a 2 day stop at City of Rocks State Park and a visit to the Gila Cliff Dwellings (500 year old indian village cut in the rock of a cliff). Because it’s a 200+ km drive , we decided to stay at the park and do some trails. We will in the future have the opportunity to visit these type of villages. By the way, in New Mexico US10 (main highway from California to Florida) is littered with trash, something we did not notice in Arizona. Lack of motivation/awareness or funds to keep the roads clean? 

L’arrivée au site de camping n’a pas été comme prévu. Malgré des sites bien aménagés, ils n’ont pas cru bon de niveler les terrains avant de mettre le bitûme. Donc le vr est en position de ‘wheely’ pour les 2 prochains jours (voir photo). La visite de la grotte a été super mais interdiction de caméras cell etc. La raison est justifiée: avec les caméras, les selfies etc, cela ralenti la visite de 1 heure ½ considérablement. J’ai quand même pris la peine de mettre sur le site quelques photos prises sur le web. Le lendemain (18), visite de Tombstone, ville historique sutrtout à cause de la bataille à l’OK Corral entre Wyatt Earp/ses frères et les Clanton/McLaury (pour plus d’info cliquer sur ce lien wikipedia). Pour moi, c’est de voir et vivre cette ville qui a représenté beaucoup dans ma jeunesse lorsque je jouais au cowboy en prenant mon faux fusil comme celui de..et oui..Wyatt Earp. Pour Martine c’est…c’est…bien elle est bien contente pour moi! C’est nos dernières journées en Arizona. Maintenant nous allons à la découverte du Nouveau-Mexique.

The arrival at the campground was not as expected. Though the sites are well maintained, they didn’t think of leveling them before putting in the pavement. So the rv looks like it’s doing a wheely (see photo). The cavern visit was great but it is forbidden to bring cameras, cell phones etc. The reason is very good: with picture taking and selfies it would slow down the 1½ hour tour too much. I’ve put on the site pics that I took from the web to give you an idea of the magnificient cave. The next day (18^th), visit of Tombstone, historical site of the famous “gunfight at the Ok Corral between the Earps and the McLaury/Clanton’s (for more info, click on this wikipedia link). For me, this is a great moment, seeing the town which represented so much in my younger years, playing a cowboy with my gun, a replica of the one used by Wyatt Earp. For Martine this was…eh..eh..well she was happy for me! These are our last days in Arizona. It’s on to New Mexico.

Un autre super parc d’état! Une situation idéale pour quelques visites intéressantes: Sabino Canyon et Mont-Lemmon/Skyline Scenic Byway. Au Sabino Canyon, on peut prendre un tram qui nous emmène à plus de 4 km de la base. De là, on peut facilement descendre à la marche (ou demeurer sur le tram pour le retour) jusqu’à la base en passant par 9 ponts dont l’eau (qui provient des neiges du Mt-Lemmon) traverse sous et parfois par-dessus la chaussée. Le lendemain on prend le Skyline Scenic Byway afin de nous rendre au Mont-Lemmon pour faire du ski: à la base du byway, nous sommes approx à 3 200 pieds (975 mètres) et le mercure frôle les 22 degrés à 9:00am (on prévoit 31 en pm). Lorsqu’on arrive à la base du centre de ski à 8 200 pieds (2 500 mètres) il fait 12 degrés! Mais horreur! Même si j’ai lu sur le web que le site est ouvert à l’année, je n’ai pas remarqué que le ski est fermé les mardi-mercredi! Pas grave, les points de vue pendant ce trajet de 60 km en valait la peine.

Another great state park. It’s an ideal location for 2 sightseeing tours: Sabino Canyon and Mount-Lemmon/Skyline Scenic Byway. At the Sabino Canyon, there is a tram that transports you about 3 miles (4km) from the base. From there you can walk down (or stay on the tram for the return trip) passing 9 bridges where water (coming from Mount Lemmon ‘s snowpack) passes under and sometimes over the road. The next day it’s up the Skyline Scenic Byway and on to the Mount-Lemmon ski valley; at the base of the byway, we are approximately at an altiude of 3 200 feet (975m) and the temperature is 22 Celsius (72F) at 9:00am (expecting 90F in the afternoon). When we arrive at the ski valley at 8 200 feet (2 500m), it’s 53F! But oh no! Even if on the website it says that they are open year round, I did not notice that skiing is closed on Tuesday’s-Wednesday’s! No matter, the 60 km trip (37miles) was worth it.

Au Tucson Koa, nous avons réservé un site “Deluxe patio and grass (gazon)”… où les gens emmènent leurs chiens faire leur besoin sur notre gazon! Vraiment pas notre genre de campground avec des voisins à 6 pieds et même moi (avec mes oreilles) capables d’entendre leurs flatulences! On en a profité pour sortir chaque jour et soir. Premier soir souper au resto Acacia: pétoncles pour Martine et carré d’agneau pour moi. Très bon mais pas exceptionnel. Le lendemain, visite du Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum à ne pas manquer lors d’une visite à Tucson. Presque tout se passe à l’extérieur. On y voit la faune (de très près) et la flore de la région. Petit tour (bucket list exige!) du Saguaro National Park. Ces cactus étant présents partout dans la région, nous n’avons fait que le Visitor Center et une randonnée sur une route de terre. Pas d’arrêt au Old Tucson Studios, ville western reconstituée: à 19.95$ par personne…non merci. On s’arrêtera dans les prochains jours à une vrai ville du far-west, Tombstone. Pour la St-Valentin, souper au Signature Grill au Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa à flanc de montagne (425$ US la nuit). Excellent resto et une vue époustouflante sur la vallée de Tucson.  En passant, cette ville a très peu d’autoroutes, mais plusieurs grandes artères avec de nombreux feux de circulation, donc les trajets sont longs. Si on y revient, on sera plus stratégique dans nos choix de camping. Pour les visites à l’ouest de la ville, nous allons privilégier le Gilbert Ray Campground.

We reserved a “Deluxe with patio and grass” where people bring their dogs to do their business on our grass! Really not our kind of campground with neighbors within smelling distance of their natural gasses! We opted to go out every day and night. First night we went to Acacia: Martine had the scallops and I the rack of lamb. Good meal but not exceptional. The 14^th was a full day. We started by visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a site not to be missed. Most of the exhibits are outside: it’s a living museum displaying the wildlife and vegetation of the area. Next was a short visit to the Saguaro National Park. Since these cacti are present all over the area, we only stopped at the visitor center and made the dirt road loop. At 19.95$ per person, no stops at the Old Tucson Studios (old western town). In the next few days we will be visiting a real historic western town, Tombstone. For St-Valentine, dinner at the Signature Grill at the Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa (425$ US per night). Great restaurant and a great view of the Tucson valley. By the way, there are not a lot of highways in Tucson but mostly multi-lane boulevards with a lot of road lights. So trips are long. When we do come back we will be more strategic in our choice of campgrounds. For the visits on the west side of the city, we’d camp at the Gilbert Ray campground.

McDowell Mountain est un autre camping régional qui rivalise facilement avec les campings de l’état: grands sites bien aménagés, installations très propres et des bénévoles super accueillants. Mais ce que nous avons le plus apprécié c’est la ville avoisinante (Fountain Hills) et son merveilleux parc avec sa fontaine d’une hauteur de plus de 300 pieds (90 mètres). Le lendemain (le 12), ce fut une découverte: le Picacho Peak State Park. Décidément un endroit exceptionnel entre Phoenix et Tucson avec des randonnées à flanc de montagne. On y reviendra sûrement un jour.

McDowell Mountain is another regional park that is as good the state parks: well maintained sites, clean facilities and friendly volunteers. But what we appreciated most was the nearby town of Fountain Hills with its wonderful park offering a superb 300 foot high fountain. The next day (the 12^th), we were amazed by Picacho State Park. An exceptional place between Phoenix and Tucson with trails up the mountain peaks. We will definitely return here one day.

Nous devions prendre notre avion le 10 au matin et atterrir à Phoenix à 13:00. Mais en arrivant è l’aéroport à 5:15am, l’agente Westjet me dit que notre départ est le 11!! Après longue discussion je lui montre un courriel reçu fin novembre qui indique le départ le 10.. Elle lit ce courriel et plus bas…effectivementl, il y a changement pour le 11…oups..Pas grave on nous met sur un vol Mtl-Tor-Calgary-Phoenix avec arrivée à 19:30..en classe affaires. Pas pire pour mon erreur!  Nous avions laissé le vr chez un concessionnaire afin d’effectuer changement d’huile et petite réparation.Trop tard pour récupérer le VR alors Best Western. Le lendemain matin on récupère le vr mais voilà il y a eu un petit accrochage et une des portes est un peu crapoutie. On peut soit attendre 5-10 jours pour le remplacement ou bien elle crédite une bonne partie des services encourus. Pas le temps d’attendre à Phoenix donc crédit et on reprend la route. Je dois avouer que ces gens (Arizona RV Supercenter) sont très honnêtes car il aurait été facile de ne pas dire mot puisque ce n’était pas très apparent. Merci Anna Marie!

We were taking the plane the 10^th in the mnorning and land in Phoenix at 13:00. But when we arrived at the airpor at 5:15 am, the Westjet agent told us that our flight was on the 11^th…After a long discussion, I show her the last email I received from them late November that states our departure on the 10^th. She then asked me to show her that email and lower in the email it is clear that the new departure is on the 11^th…oups. No worry, she puts us on a flight plan Mtl-Tor-Calgary-Phoenix arriving at 19:30..in business class. Not a bad mistake on my part! We had left the rv at an rv maintenance retailer for an oil change and a small repair. Too late to get the RV so a night at the Best Western. Next morning we get the rv only to find out there’s been a little mishap and one of the storage doors is cringed. Either we wait 5-10 days for the replacement or they will credit a good portion of the work already done. No time to waste we take the credit and we go our way. I must admit that these folks (Arizona RV Supercenter) are very honest; it would have been very easy not to say a word since the damage is not very apparent. Thank you Anna Marie! 

Pendant ces 7 jours nous avons visité 3 parcs près de Phoenix. 1. White Tank Regional Park: bonne randonnée surtout le Waterfall trail (pas de chutes d’eau mais une belle marche). Puisque le temps était un peu moche, on en a profité pour aller voir le dernier Star Wars: pour 12$, 3D, lazy boy en cuir écran géant! 2. Usery Mountain Regional Park: beaux sites et beaucoup de gens qui y passent l’hiver. Meilleur endroit que le White Tank et plus près des services (épiceries etc). 3. Lost Dutchman State Park: notre préféré des 3: randonnées en montagne (Superstition Mountain) avec un décor du far west, sans compter le village fantôme de Goldfield (très mercantile cependant).  C’est à Mesa que nous laissons le vr pour une réparation (eau qui coule du chauffe-eau sporadiquement et changement d’huile) pour une visite éclair à Montréal de 3 jours..On reprend le 10 février!

During these 7 days we visited 3 parks near Phoenix. 1. White Tank Regional Park: good trails but preferred the Waterfall Trail (unfortunately no falls today but a great walk). Since the weather was mushy, decided to go see the last Star Wars movie: for 12$, 3D, leather lazy boys and a giant screen! 2. Usery Mountain Regional Park: nice campsites and a lot of campers that spend the winter here. Better than White Tank and closer to amenities and services. 3. Lost Dutchman State Park: great trails leading to Superstition Mountain with a true far west feel. Close by is the Goldfield Ghost Town, which is more of a tourist attraction. After leaving the RV in Mesa for  repairs (water heater leakage and oil change), we’re off to Montreal for 3 days. Back here on the 10^th!

Puisque nous avons décidé de demeurer à Indio une journée supplémentaire, nous n’avions qu’une journée pour le Joshua National Park. Le site de camping choisi était excellent, entouré de rochers “Jumbo” pour explorer et escalader. Vu le manque de temps, nous n’avons pas vraiment fait d’excursion mais on a fait un saut au Visitor Center. Le lendemain (30 janvier) on se rend au Buckskin Mountain State Park en Arizona, camping sur le bord de la rivière Colorado. Journée superbe (24 celsius) pour faire une randonnée avec vue des environs. Le lendemain matin, un superbe trek de 2 heures en montagne. Life is good.

Since we stayed an extra day in Indio, we had to cut short our visit in Joshua Tree National Park. The campsite was out of this world, encircled by jumbo boulders to explore and climb. Since our visit was shortened, we did not do any long trails but did go to the Visitor Center. The next day was spent in Arizona’s Buckskin Mountain State Park, on the shores of the Colorado river. Great day (74 degrees) and did a trail with a great view of the surroundings. The next morning, a 2 hour trek in the mountains. Life is good.

Bon! Un moment de grand luxe durant ce voyage: 4 piscines, gym complet, golf exécutif, site de grande dimension avec…cuisine extérieure complète: four, frigidaire, lavabo double, lave-vaisselle et BBQ, sans compter des comptoirs de granite. 2 zones de patio qui surplombent une fontaine et le golf. Pas de restos cette semaine, on prépare entre autre, steaks, filet de porc et rôti tri-tip sur le Bar-Bek. Humm. Malgré que nous avions de loin le vr le moins dispendieux sur le resort (plusieurs vr de plus de 500 000$ US), les gens ont été super sympa avec nous. On sera de retour dans les prochaines années, c’est certain.

A welcomed luxury stopover during this trip:  4 pools, complete gym, executive golf course, a big campsite…with an outdoor kitchen: oven, fridge, dishwasher and BBQ, big countertops, 2 patio zones that overlook a fountain and the golf course. No restaurants this week, we BBQ’d steaks, pork tenderloin, and tri-tip roast just to mention a few. Even if we had the least expensive motorhome (lots of rv’s over 500 000$ US), people were so friendly. We will be back.

Anza Borrego est un oasis au milieu du désert. Des palmiers “parapluie” jonchent ce camping (plein service). Le silence est de mise dans le désert: on speut presque entendre sa conjointe respirer tellement il n’y a pas de bruit. Les lever et coucher de soleil sont à faire rêver. La zone est considérée une zone de “noirceur” afin de pouvoir admirer le ciel. Il y a même des directives pour les habitants du village afin d’utiliser certains éclairages pour garder le ciel le plus noir possible. C’est la pleine lune donc pas autant d’étoiles mais quand même la possibilité de prendre une marche de soir très bien éclairée. Ici fin janvier début février, à 30-45 minutes avant le lever du soleil, on peut voir à l’oeil nu 5 planètes alignées en élipse dans le ciel: Mercure, Venus, Mars, Jupiter et Saturne. Spécial. 

Anza-Borrego is an oasis in the middle of the desert. Fan palm trees are all over the campsites. Silence is so present in the desert: you can nearly hear your spouse breathe. The sunrises and sunsets are to die for. Anza-Borrego is considered a “dark sky area”. In fact, there are special directives for the townspoeple about using special exterior lighting to avoid artificial light. But while our stay, it was a full moon so there weren’t as many stars. Here at the end of January beginning of February, 30 to 45 minutes prior to sunrise, you an see on the horizon 5 planets: aligned on an elliptical line: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Awsome!

Que dire…Super! On aurait facilement passé plus d’une semaine à San Diego. Belle ville propre, système routier efficace, beaux sites et attractions et une température idéale. On a réussit à faire les sites sur le bucket list: Sand Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Old Town, Seaport Village, Coronado, Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego Safari Park et un bijou de petite ville sur l’océan, La Jolla. À ne pas manquer dans cette charmante petite ville, une table à l’extéreiur chez Cody’s en dégustant un Fish & Chips! À San Diego on a trouvé un resto italien sympa mais bonne bouffe, Parma Cuccina Italiana. Vraiment, revenir à San Diego serait un plaisir. Ah oui. On a fait des épiceries à un marché mexicain, El Super, qui nous a rappelé le Gigante lors de nos voyages avec les enfants à Puerto Vallarta. Plein de marques uniquement en mexicain (ok en espagnol!) et des légumes à des prix dérisoires..Gracias me amigos!

What can I say…Wow. We could have spent more than a week in San Diego. Gorgeous city, clean, efficient highway system, great sites and attractions and unbeatable weather. We were able to see most of the sites on our bucket list: Sand Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Old Town, Seaport Village, Coronado, Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego Safari Park and a gem of a oceanside city, La Jolla. Not to be missed in this little city, an outside table at Cody’s..and try the Fish & Chips. Another great restaurant but in San Diego is Parma Cuccina Italiana that serves a mean Fagottini Tartuffo (pasta with truffles). Coming back to this city will be very pleasurable. Oh yes. We did our groceries at a local mexican fare called El Super which reminded us of Gigante when vacationing with the kids in in Puerto Vallarta. Full of brands in mexican (ok spanish!) and vegetables at bargain prices. Gracias me amigos!

Vu le long weekend américain (Martin Luther King Day le lundi), le campground était bondé, surtout par des planchistes puisqu’on annonçait des vagues de 8 à 15 pieds (3 à 5 mètres). Donc 3 jours à se promener sur la plage et admirer les prouesses des surfer et voir des super couchers de soleil. San Elijo State Beach, un parc à visiter encore et encore… Ah oui, et un resto wow: le Pacific Coast Grill!

San Elijo State Beach campground is on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  And since this was a long weekend for americans (Martin Luther King Day on the Monday), the campground was packed, mainly by surfers as they were expecting waves between 8 to 15 feet. So 3 days of walking the beach admiring the exploits of the wave runners and watching the sunsets each night. San Elijo State Beach, a prk to visit again and again… Oh yes, and a great restaurant: Pacific Coast Grill!

Malgré une météo ordinaire à cause de El Nino, les 2 sites de camping étaient super. 9 et 10 janvier: San Clemente State Park: Juché sur un cap 100 pieds au dessus de la mer, camping avec tous les services et petite marche pour se rendre à l’océan…et au train car à cet endroit, il passe tout près de la mer. 11 au 13 janvier: Morro Campground au Crystal Cove State Beach: encore plus haut en montagne, on doit passer par un tunnel pour accéder à la plage et attention à marée haute..le tunnel se remplit. Le site est en plein Orange County, région richissime et dont plusieurs émission de télé en ont fait état. Puisque le jeep avait besoin d’un lavage, rendez-vous au Newport Beach Carwash…Incroyable! Des Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, une Maserati et un jeep du Québec avec 2 vélos accrochés à l’arrière. Et bien à 33$ US, pourquoi ne pas en profiter pour laver les vélos! Mais quelle job: balayeuse partout, laveuse automatisée et ensuite 2 gars qui essuient, frottent, et asticotent le jeep avec armorall et autres produits esthétiques: en tout 45 minutes. Le jeep n ‘a jamais été aussi heureux!

Though the weather is still ordinary (El Nino), the 2 camping parks were super. January 9^th & 10^th: San Clemente State Park: Rising 100 feet above the ocean, the campground offers full hookups and is a short but steep walk down to the beach… and to the train that passes between the cliffs and the ocean. January 11^th to 13^th: Morro Campground at Crystal Cove Beach: Even higher on a ridge and you need to go through a tunnel to get to the ocean. But be careful at high tide: the tunnel fills up. The park is smack in the middle of money rich Orange County, star of various TV shows. . Decided to have the Jeep washed so went to the Newport Beach Carwash. Incredible! A ton of Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, one Maserati and a Jeep from Quebec with 2 bikes on the back. Well at 33$ why not have the bikes washed also! But what a job: vacuum, automatic washer and then 2 guys that dry, shine and use different products to beautify your car. In all, 45 minutes at the spa…The Jeep has never been happier!

Dû au mauvais temps (El Nino), nous avons décidé de demeurer à Morro Bay pour 4 jours au lieu de 2 Juste à voir les innondations, glissements de boue, etc. ça nous semble plus sécuritaire. Ici, à part des vagues de 12-18 pieds et beaucoup de pluie, pas de problème. La région (Paso Robles) est reconnue pour ses vignobles (spécialité les Zinfindel) on en profite donc pour en visiter 4 dont 2 très intéressants: Peachy et Le Vigne. Ici rien à voir avec Sonoma ou Napa: la plupart des maisons de dégustation sont modestes et plus abordables. Les vins sont jeunes mais très bons. Également arrêt au Elephant Seal (éléphant de mer) Vista Point, congrégation de plus de 15 000 bêtes, avant une visite au Hearst Castle, bâti au début des 1900 par le magnat des média, William Randolph Hearst. Il a un vécu des plus fascinants. Imaginez dans ces années gagner plus de 50 000$ PAR JOUR. Il était cependant très généreux avec ses $$.

Bad weather (El Nino) has modified our plan so we are staying in Morro Bay for 4 nights instead of 2: safer since further south, there are mud slides, flooding etc. Here apart from 12-18 feet waves and rain, no danger. The region (Paso Robles) is known for its  wines (mostly for the Zinfandel), so visited 4 though we thought that 2 were more interesting: Peachy and Le Vigne. Here nothing to do with Sonoma or Napa: most of the Tasting rooms are more modest and more affordable. The vines are byoung but the wines are very good. Also a stop at Elephant seal Vista point where it is home to more than 15 000 of them. Then off to see Hearst Castle, built in the early 1900 by the media magnate, William Randolph Hearst. Earning more than $50,000 A DAY, he was very generous with the people around him.

Vu qu’on annonçait un temps de canard, j’ai pensé passer outre la Côte de Big Sur mais finalement on est demeuré sur le plan et tant mieux. La côte est magnifique et sûrement une des belles routes pour la conduite. Rencontre de l’océan avec les montagnes: aucune de nos photos rend justice au paysage. De plus, le Kirk Creek Campground est juché à une centaine de pied au dessus de la mer. Pluie et grands vents au rendez-vous mais content d’être ici. À voir nos pauvres voisins dans une tente, on a une pensée pour eux… tout en sirotant un café au Baileys et en regardant un épisode de Downton Abbey… Life is good!

Since bad weather was going through the Big Sur Coast, I thought of changing the itineray but decided to go anyway and did not regret it. The coast is magnificient and is probably on of the best driving roads in America. The meeting of sea and mountains: none of our pictures can capture the beauty of seeing it live. In addition, the Kirk Creek Campground is 100 feet above the ocean with a spectacular view of the surroundings. Rain and big winds are present but we are glad to be here. We feel for our neighbors who are in a tent,,. while we savour a Bailey’s coffee and watching an episode of Downton Abbey…Life is good!

La récupération du Jeep et du VR sans problème et tout fonctionne à merveille. Première journée au boardwalk de Santa Cruz, genre de Parc Belmont (ancien parc d’amusement genre La Ronde mais qui date des années 50-60), sur le bord de l’océan. Back to the future en fait. Le 1er janvier 2016, c’est la visite du Monterey Bay Aquarium: fantastique! Un des plus beaux aquariums qu’on ait visité. Puis le 2, le 17 mile drive: randonnée par Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach et Carmel: parc d’amusement des riches. Le soir, c’est souper au Monterey Fish House, très populaire: en arivant à 17:15 attente d’une heure… Genre de Schwartz’ mais pour fruits de mer. Exquis!

Pick-up of Jeep and RV went smoothly and everything in great working order. First day, we went to the Sanrta Cruz boardwalk, kind of a Coney Island amusement park, a flashback to the 50’s 60’s. On the 1^st of January went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium; fantastic! So far, one of the best aquariums that we’ve visited. On the 2^nd,did the 17 mile drive: Spanish Bay, Pevbble Beach and Carmel: amusement park for the rich. Went for supper at the Monterey Fish House, very popular. Even if we were there at 17:15, the wait was 1 hour but was worth it!

3 belles journées à Las Vegas. Mal parti puisque le vol du matin via Dallas a été annulé mais pour bonne cause: tornades et décès la veille. Donc on a pris un vol de soir ce qui voulait dire qu’on manquait le show de Jerry Seinfeld. On nous propose donc Olivia Newton John pour le 29 au soir. Bon, des billets de 120$ gratos ok! Avant d’y aller, Martine et moi ne pouvions se rappeler que de 2-3 chansons mais finalement on connaissait la majorité. Olivia n’a pas vieilli: le botox et la chirurgie plastique (en masse) a fait effet! Pour le blackjack je citerai le vieux dicton: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas..on passe un tour ok?

3 beautiful days in Vegas. Didn’t start well since our flight via Dallas was cancelled but for the right reasons: tornadoes and weather related deaths. So took an evening flight which meant that we missed Jerry Seinfeld’s show. We were offered tickets to Olivia Newton-John’s show on the 29th and at 120$ a pop sure we’ll go! Before going to her show, Martine and I could only remember 2 or 3 of her songs, but to our surprise, we knew most of them. Olivia has aged well: botox and a few plastic surgeries have surely helped!  As for the blackjack, I’ll quote the saying: What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas..
