  • 31/01-06/02 2016: White Tank-Usery Mountain-Lost Dutchman State Park, Arizona

    Pendant ces 7 jours nous avons visité 3 parcs près de Phoenix. 1. White Tank Regional Park: bonne randonnée surtout le Waterfall trail (pas de chutes d’eau mais une belle marche). Puisque le temps était un peu moche, on en a profité pour aller voir le dernier Star Wars: pour 12$, 3D, lazy boy en cuir écran géant! 2. Usery Mountain Regional Park: beaux sites et beaucoup de gens qui y passent l’hiver. Meilleur endroit que le White Tank et plus près des services (épiceries etc). 3. Lost Dutchman State Park: notre préféré des 3: randonnées en montagne (Superstition Mountain) avec un décor du far west, sans compter le village fantôme de Goldfield (très mercantile cependant).  C’est à Mesa que nous laissons le vr pour une réparation (eau qui coule du chauffe-eau sporadiquement et changement d’huile) pour une visite éclair à Montréal de 3 jours..On reprend le 10 février!

     

    During these 7 days we visited 3 parks near Phoenix. 1. White Tank Regional Park: good trails but preferred the Waterfall Trail (unfortunately no falls today but a great walk). Since the weather was mushy, decided to go see the last Star Wars movie: for 12$, 3D, leather lazy boys and a giant screen! 2. Usery Mountain Regional Park: nice campsites and a lot of campers that spend the winter here. Better than White Tank and closer to amenities and services. 3. Lost Dutchman State Park: great trails leading to Superstition Mountain with a true far west feel. Close by is the Goldfield Ghost Town, which is more of a tourist attraction. After leaving the RV in Mesa for  repairs (water heater leakage and oil change), we’re off to Montreal for 3 days. Back here on the 10th!

  • 29-30/01 2016: Joshua National Park, Ca & Buckskin Mountain Sate Park, Az

    Puisque nous avons décidé de demeurer à Indio une journée supplémentaire, nous n’avions qu’une journée pour le Joshua National Park. Le site de camping choisi était excellent, entouré de rochers “Jumbo” pour explorer et escalader. Vu le manque de temps, nous n’avons pas vraiment fait d’excursion mais on a fait un saut au Visitor Center. Le lendemain (30 janvier) on se rend au Buckskin Mountain State Park en Arizona, camping sur le bord de la rivière Colorado. Journée superbe (24 celsius) pour faire une randonnée avec vue des environs. Le lendemain matin, un superbe trek de 2 heures en montagne. Life is good.

    Since we stayed an extra day in Indio, we had to cut short our visit in Joshua Tree National Park. The campsite was out of this world, encircled by jumbo boulders to explore and climb. Since our visit was shortened, we did not do any long trails but did go to the Visitor Center. The next day was spent in Arizona’s Buckskin Mountain State Park, on the shores of the Colorado river. Great day (74 degrees) and did a trail with a great view of the surroundings. The next morning, a 2 hour trek in the mountains. Life is good.

  • 23-28/01 2016: Outdoor Resorts Indio, California

    Bon! Un moment de grand luxe durant ce voyage: 4 piscines, gym complet, golf exécutif, site de grande dimension avec…cuisine extérieure complète: four, frigidaire, lavabo double, lave-vaisselle et BBQ, sans compter des comptoirs de granite. 2 zones de patio qui surplombent une fontaine et le golf. Pas de restos cette semaine, on prépare entre autre, steaks, filet de porc et rôti tri-tip sur le Bar-Bek. Humm. Malgré que nous avions de loin le vr le moins dispendieux sur le resort (plusieurs vr de plus de 500 000$ US), les gens ont été super sympa avec nous. On sera de retour dans les prochaines années, c’est certain.

    A welcomed luxury stopover during this trip:  4 pools, complete gym, executive golf course, a big campsite…with an outdoor kitchen: oven, fridge, dishwasher and BBQ, big countertops, 2 patio zones that overlook a fountain and the golf course. No restaurants this week, we BBQ’d steaks, pork tenderloin, and tri-tip roast just to mention a few. Even if we had the least expensive motorhome (lots of rv’s over 500 000$ US), people were so friendly. We will be back.

  • 21-22/01 2016: Anza Borrego State Park, California

    Anza Borrego est un oasis au milieu du désert. Des palmiers “parapluie” jonchent ce camping (plein service). Le silence est de mise dans le désert: on speut presque entendre sa conjointe respirer tellement il n’y a pas de bruit. Les lever et coucher de soleil sont à faire rêver. La zone est considérée une zone de “noirceur” afin de pouvoir admirer le ciel. Il y a même des directives pour les habitants du village afin d’utiliser certains éclairages pour garder le ciel le plus noir possible. C’est la pleine lune donc pas autant d’étoiles mais quand même la possibilité de prendre une marche de soir très bien éclairée. Ici fin janvier début février, à 30-45 minutes avant le lever du soleil, on peut voir à l’oeil nu 5 planètes alignées en élipse dans le ciel: Mercure, Venus, Mars, Jupiter et Saturne. Spécial. 

    Anza-Borrego is an oasis in the middle of the desert. Fan palm trees are all over the campsites. Silence is so present in the desert: you can nearly hear your spouse breathe. The sunrises and sunsets are to die for. Anza-Borrego is considered a “dark sky area”. In fact, there are special directives for the townspoeple about using special exterior lighting to avoid artificial light. But while our stay, it was a full moon so there weren’t as many stars. Here at the end of January beginning of February, 30 to 45 minutes prior to sunrise, you an see on the horizon 5 planets: aligned on an elliptical line: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Awsome!

  • 17-20/01 2016: San Diego, California

    Que dire…Super! On aurait facilement passé plus d’une semaine à San Diego. Belle ville propre, système routier efficace, beaux sites et attractions et une température idéale. On a réussit à faire les sites sur le bucket list: Sand Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Old Town, Seaport Village, Coronado, Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego Safari Park et un bijou de petite ville sur l’océan, La Jolla. À ne pas manquer dans cette charmante petite ville, une table à l’extéreiur chez Cody’s en dégustant un Fish & Chips! À San Diego on a trouvé un resto italien sympa mais bonne bouffe, Parma Cuccina Italiana. Vraiment, revenir à San Diego serait un plaisir. Ah oui. On a fait des épiceries à un marché mexicain, El Super, qui nous a rappelé le Gigante lors de nos voyages avec les enfants à Puerto Vallarta. Plein de marques uniquement en mexicain (ok en espagnol!) et des légumes à des prix dérisoires..Gracias me amigos!

    What can I say…Wow. We could have spent more than a week in San Diego. Gorgeous city, clean, efficient highway system, great sites and attractions and unbeatable weather. We were able to see most of the sites on our bucket list: Sand Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Old Town, Seaport Village, Coronado, Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego Safari Park and a gem of a oceanside city, La Jolla. Not to be missed in this little city, an outside table at Cody’s..and try the Fish & Chips. Another great restaurant but in San Diego is Parma Cuccina Italiana that serves a mean Fagottini Tartuffo (pasta with truffles). Coming back to this city will be very pleasurable. Oh yes. We did our groceries at a local mexican fare called El Super which reminded us of Gigante when vacationing with the kids in in Puerto Vallarta. Full of brands in mexican (ok spanish!) and vegetables at bargain prices. Gracias me amigos!

  • 14-16/01 2016: San Elijo State Beach à Encenitas, California

    Vu le long weekend américain (Martin Luther King Day le lundi), le campground était bondé, surtout par des planchistes puisqu’on annonçait des vagues de 8 à 15 pieds (3 à 5 mètres). Donc 3 jours à se promener sur la plage et admirer les prouesses des surfer et voir des super couchers de soleil. San Elijo State Beach, un parc à visiter encore et encore… Ah oui, et un resto wow: le Pacific Coast Grill!

    San Elijo State Beach campground is on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  And since this was a long weekend for americans (Martin Luther King Day on the Monday), the campground was packed, mainly by surfers as they were expecting waves between 8 to 15 feet. So 3 days of walking the beach admiring the exploits of the wave runners and watching the sunsets each night. San Elijo State Beach, a prk to visit again and again… Oh yes, and a great restaurant: Pacific Coast Grill!

  • 09-13/01 2016 San Clemente et Laguna Beach, California

    Malgré une météo ordinaire à cause de El Nino, les 2 sites de camping étaient super. 9 et 10 janvier: San Clemente State Park: Juché sur un cap 100 pieds au dessus de la mer, camping avec tous les services et petite marche pour se rendre à l’océan…et au train car à cet endroit, il passe tout près de la mer. 11 au 13 janvier: Morro Campground au Crystal Cove State Beach: encore plus haut en montagne, on doit passer par un tunnel pour accéder à la plage et attention à marée haute..le tunnel se remplit. Le site est en plein Orange County, région richissime et dont plusieurs émission de télé en ont fait état. Puisque le jeep avait besoin d’un lavage, rendez-vous au Newport Beach Carwash…Incroyable! Des Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, une Maserati et un jeep du Québec avec 2 vélos accrochés à l’arrière. Et bien à 33$ US, pourquoi ne pas en profiter pour laver les vélos! Mais quelle job: balayeuse partout, laveuse automatisée et ensuite 2 gars qui essuient, frottent, et asticotent le jeep avec armorall et autres produits esthétiques: en tout 45 minutes. Le jeep n ‘a jamais été aussi heureux!

    Though the weather is still ordinary (El Nino), the 2 camping parks were super. January 9th & 10th: San Clemente State Park: Rising 100 feet above the ocean, the campground offers full hookups and is a short but steep walk down to the beach… and to the train that passes between the cliffs and the ocean. January 11th to 13th: Morro Campground at Crystal Cove Beach: Even higher on a ridge and you need to go through a tunnel to get to the ocean. But be careful at high tide: the tunnel fills up. The park is smack in the middle of money rich Orange County, star of various TV shows. . Decided to have the Jeep washed so went to the Newport Beach Carwash. Incredible! A ton of Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, one Maserati and a Jeep from Quebec with 2 bikes on the back. Well at 33$ why not have the bikes washed also! But what a job: vacuum, automatic washer and then 2 guys that dry, shine and use different products to beautify your car. In all, 45 minutes at the spa…The Jeep has never been happier!

  • 05-08/01 2016 Morro Bay, California

    Dû au mauvais temps (El Nino), nous avons décidé de demeurer à Morro Bay pour 4 jours au lieu de 2 Juste à voir les innondations, glissements de boue, etc. ça nous semble plus sécuritaire. Ici, à part des vagues de 12-18 pieds et beaucoup de pluie, pas de problème. La région (Paso Robles) est reconnue pour ses vignobles (spécialité les Zinfindel) on en profite donc pour en visiter 4 dont 2 très intéressants: Peachy et Le Vigne. Ici rien à voir avec Sonoma ou Napa: la plupart des maisons de dégustation sont modestes et plus abordables. Les vins sont jeunes mais très bons. Également arrêt au Elephant Seal (éléphant de mer) Vista Point, congrégation de plus de 15 000 bêtes, avant une visite au Hearst Castle, bâti au début des 1900 par le magnat des média, William Randolph Hearst. Il a un vécu des plus fascinants. Imaginez dans ces années gagner plus de 50 000$ PAR JOUR. Il était cependant très généreux avec ses $$.

    Bad weather (El Nino) has modified our plan so we are staying in Morro Bay for 4 nights instead of 2: safer since further south, there are mud slides, flooding etc. Here apart from 12-18 feet waves and rain, no danger. The region (Paso Robles) is known for its  wines (mostly for the Zinfandel), so visited 4 though we thought that 2 were more interesting: Peachy and Le Vigne. Here nothing to do with Sonoma or Napa: most of the Tasting rooms are more modest and more affordable. The vines are byoung but the wines are very good. Also a stop at Elephant seal Vista point where it is home to more than 15 000 of them. Then off to see Hearst Castle, built in the early 1900 by the media magnate, William Randolph Hearst. Earning more than $50,000 A DAY, he was very generous with the people around him.
